17 April 2012 Shaikha Mai Opens "Manama City of Joy" Carnival

Under the slogan “Manama, a city of Joy”, the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with Bahrain Chamber of Commerce & Industry, inaugurated the first popular heritage carnival yesterday  at the iconic Bab Al-Bahrain and old suq. The Ministry of Culture is holding this festival ahead of the upcoming 8th Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, scheduled to be held this weekend. The event aims at attracting tourists to get a first-hand taste of Bahrain centuries-old civilization and vivid heritage. Titled "Manama City of Joy" the event exposed facets of traditional life and handicrafts. Culture Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa opened the carnival, describing the event as an opportunity to woo visitors and tourists to get a taste of daily Bahraini life and genuine hospitality.
The carnival showcases scenes of traditional Bahraini life, in order to explore this amazing city with all its smells, sounds, architecture, and culture and not to mention the curious multi-culturalsociety. Walking around the extremely crowded souq, located in the heart of the city , will make you revive the memory of the place. Enjoy  looking at all the traditional shops selling all kinds of spices, fabrics, kaftans, thobes, handicrafts, souvenirs, dry fruits, nuts, and any other thing you can imagine, will make you travel through time and space.
H.E, Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammad Al Khalifa, the Minister of Culture, said during the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by many businessmen, intellectuals and media people that this event will continue throughout the actual month. The carnival coincides with the Formula One Grand Prix race and aims to attract visitors and tourists to get acquainted with the traditional genuine Bahraini life in a joyful atmosphere. The slogan “Manama, a city of Joy” is another facet of “Manama, as the capital of Arab Culture in 2012” and also “Manama as the Capital of Arab Tourism, 2013”.
It is worth mentioning that many craftsmen from Al Jasra Handicraft Centre participated in this event, in addition to many others invited by foreign embassies hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain, which reflects the diversity and openness of the Bahraini society. Traditional music groups will be performing at the carnival and the public will certainly enjoy the animation of the daily events through the actual month.
