09 January 2012 Modern fine arts … future vision from an acclaimed European experience

Manama: A lecture on building professional art establishments was held last night (Jan 9) as a part of Manama Capital of Arab Culture at Bahrain Fort Museum.

The specialized lecture was given by Swiss-based Beyeler Foundation promotional manager Jims Coach, who shed light on administrative and vocational fine art institutions.

He praised Culture Minister Shaikha bint Mohammed Al Khalifa's interest in contemporary art and prioritizing in festivities being held in Bahrain.

Mr Coach applauded Bahrain's efforts to highlight the importance of artistic management and its significance to the improvement and development of the art in the country.

A highlight on the foundation and its museum in Basel, Switzerland, besides activities was showcased at the lecture.

"At the age of 24, Ernst Beyeler worked as a temporary employee at an antiquarian bookshop when suddenly its owner died and the heirs let the bookshop to Mr Beyeler," said Mr Coach.

"Beyeler only had fainted knowledge about art but he installed himself in a library started his research and discovered that the works were unique and the unbelievable happened and he sold the lot to the renowned art museum of Zurich."

Mr Coach said that the bookshop was renamed to Beyeler Gallery in 1953 after Beyeler married his wife, who also worked there, and started exhibiting artworks by Bonnard, Gaugin, Matisse and Picasso.

"In the course of decades, 16,000 masterpieces went through Mr Beyeler's hands.

He added that Mr Beyeler was a co-founder to Art Basel Festival in the 70s, besides other international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, London and New York.

"Today, the establishment, which opened its headquarters in 1997 holds three international festivals a year."

Mr Coach said that the society currently has friends, which contribute financially and networkwise, as well as sponsors.

"We mix art in its full perspective in our work, whether dance, writing, acting and singing and well-known artsist Jeff Koons will be exhibiting this summer as Jane Birkin will be performing her legendary French chansons."
