The Ministry of Culture (MOC) of the Kingdom of Bahrain was established in June 2010. Under the leadership of HE Shaikha Mai Al Khalifa, Minister of Culture, the Ministry has embarked on an ambitious programme designed to foster cultural dialogue and embrace tourism by developing the cultural infrastructure of Bahrain and conserving its heritage. Notable initiatives for the upcoming future include the establishment of a National Theatre set to open in 2012, five archaeological site museums, the inscription of three heritage sites to the UNESCO World Heritage list as well as a comprehensive rehabilitation plan of the historical centres of Manama and Muharraq. The Ministry has also created a number of dynamic programmes such as the Spring of Culture and the Bahrain Summer Festival, which have become part of the annual cultural agenda of the island, attracting both local and regional audiences.
