The civilization of Dilmun left behind on the main island the heaviest concentration of prehistoric burial grounds any- where on earth, some 80,000 mounds, which were excavated and studied by many archaeological expedition missions, estimating its history back to 2250-1700 BC. Given the richness of these burial mounds, containing artefacts that reflect the lifestyle of Dilmunians, they were considered as a unique and exceptional historical data record, and were consequently registered on UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
