Paris Design Week 2018, BACA Promotes Pottery Industry in 1000 Vases Exhibition, Paris, France

Bahrain’s Authority for Culture & Antiquities is taking part in “1000 Vases”, an exhibition redefining space and the presentation of the art object. The scenography by the Italian architect Roberto Baciocchi states that the value of a work can be enriched by its proximity to another piece. The swarm of objects brings forth an emotional tingling sensation; the exhibition itself is a collector of emotions, and reflects humanity in all its diversity and richness.

Her Excellency Shaikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Director-General of Culture and Arts, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities led a BACA delegation to Paris for its participation in the “1000 Vases” exhibition with the "Unearthing” initiative at Paris Design Week 2018, which takes place from 7-10 September.

Bahrain’s pavilion, entitled ‘Unearthing BH’, showcased the designs of two young Bahraini designers, Maitham Almubarak and Othman Khunji, who were commissioned by BACA to collaborate and work closely with local craftsmen to create pottery designs with a modern twist.

A unique exhibition presenting the best works showcased in “Unearthing”, an initiative by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities to support the pottery industry in Bahrain which puts a new and contemporary spin on Bahraini pottery through crowdsourcing, adding new materials, such as iron and copper.

‘Unearthing BH’ initiative objective, which kicked off in 2016, of this on-going project is to create an accessible online interface using a guided interactive method that allows the end-user to contribute and use their imagination instead of the current system in which craftsmen produce hundreds of replicas of the same product. The system is not a commercial ‘make your own pot’ kind of system, rather it is a tool that gives the public the opportunity to share what they deem beautiful while at the same time drawing upon the bespoke and imperfect character of the craft. The aim of which serves to stimulate and heighten the human senses, such as sight, sound and touch.

Worth to mention that The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) had previously participated in ABWAB 2016, an exhibition which consisted of six international pavilions held during Dubai Design Week, UAE.
