Hand Block Printing Workshop

Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre is organizing a Block Printing Workshop on handwoven organic cotton fabric (Naseej).  Block printing on textiles is a tradition that spans over 800 years in India. This age-old art form involves the use of hand carved wooden or clay blocks that are dipped in natural dyes or organic cotton handwoven fabric to recreate beautiful designs and patterns.

About Kala Design

Founder Kavita Sharma is an Indian architect /artist exploring the rich space of cultural heritage shared between her home country of India and her second home of Bahrain.  She works directly with artisans and craftsmen in both India and Bahrain be it in textiles, pottery and leather to make ethically produced creations. In her view, a craft signifies more than a product, it tells a story and is a way to learn more about the culture, people and place where the craft was born. Supporting traditional crafts with new innovative designs is a means of empowerment and allows the artisans to carry on their trade and pass it on to the next generation. Through her workshops, Designer Kala aims to share traditional artistic practices that are rooted in the values of ethical production and sustainable living.

Workshop Outcomes:

This workshop will give participants the chance to experience this technique by creating their own: table runner, cushion cover, tote bag or yoga bag using different patterns some of which are inspired by Islamic geometry or Maharaja Motifs.
