Wood Arket Workshop

Details of the Workshop:

Al-Jasra Handicrafts Center is organizing a workshop on the Wood Arket. Indeed, Woodcarving is one of the oldest arts of humankind. The art of cutting wood, carving and then hollowing it out, the Arket Wood workshop will present the well-known ancient art form, which uses a coping saw, or scroll saw, to cut shapes and patterns on to wood. With proper training and practice, artists can create Arabic calligraphy, botanical motifs or geometric motifs using this technique. The workshop will help participants identify different types of wood and the characteristics of each type learn the different methods of woodcutting as well as the materials, tools and machines used in cutting and decorating wood. They will also learn to paint and finish their artwork as well as identify practical applications of the technique.

  Workshop topics include:

  • Identifying the different types of wood and the characteristics of each type
  • View samples and photos of previously beautifully carved executed artworks
  • Learning about the different methods of wood cutting techniques.
  • Get acquainted with  the materials, tools and machines used in cutting and decorating wood
  • Demonstration and application of useful techniques to master creative skills of cutting wood using a manual coping saw and electrical scroll saw
  • Displaying wood finishing and painting methods
  • Making a wood integrated final object using the materials, tools and machines available for the calligraphy artwork
  • Wood finishes and paints
  • Incorporating traditional calligraphy, carved architectural elements and decorative motifs into the wood Arket.
  • Display the final artworks masterly skilled during the training course

 Workshop Outcomes:

  • Enable the trainee to distinguish between different types of wood and the characteristics of each type
  • Knowing the different methods of cutting and decorating wood and mastering the use of manual coping saw and electrical scroll saw
  • Making a wood integrated final object, providing, thus, participants with all the required skills with regard to woodcutting, using a manual coping saw and electrical scroll saw.
