Meeting Between Culture & Archaeology Authority and Ministry of Works

Preservation of heritage and the raising of standards are key elements in all projects undertaken that includes close cooperation and consultation with the Bahrain residents, was the key objective of the meeting between H.E Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa, president of Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities (BACA) and the Minister of Works, Municipality Affairs and Urban Planning Dr. Essam Khalaf. BACA Heritage Preservation Advisor Dr. Ala'a Al Habashi and Assistant Undersecretary for Joint Municipal Services Raed Al Salah also attended the meeting.

H.E Shaikha Mai welcomed Dr. Essam Khalaf, lauding the strenuous efforts of his ministry to implement and carry out all the structural projects planned by the government. H.E stressed the need and importance of communication between the different sectors in order to help in promoting comprehensive coordination between Bahrain’s institutions. Such constructive work would lead to successful organization of all activities and events contributing to making Bahrain an exceptional and unique destination in the region.

The meeting discussions focused on enhancing cooperation to preserve Bahrain's glorious urban architectural heritage, and the need for concerted efforts to promote the national identity through various projects. They also discussed the urban fabric of the city of Muharraq, and the latest list of 1300 run-down houses issued by the Technical Services Directorate. H.E. Shaikha Mai said, “These historical houses form the common denominator for all Bahrainis; they constitute the country’s memory and are sweet souvenirs. Demolishing and bulldozing these buildings is a threat to the historical value of the urban architecture, which is a source of our pride and identity.”

Dr. Alaa Habachi, the Ministry’s Restoration Consultant, presented a series of projects to be implemented in the area and the Ministry’s vision to preserve the urban heritage and archaeological sites. Dr. Habachi also explained many revolutionary ideas with regard to developing and renovating Muharraq historical houses, and highlighted the importance of old shops and historical heritage anchored there. During his intervention, Dr. Habachi also stressed the importance of the historical buildings, which should be saved from demolition and restored through revitalizing and developing heritage places.

The meeting also discussed the best ways and means of preserving historic places for use by future generations ensuring the protection of Bahrain's rich cultural heritage, such as the present and planned projects in Bab al-Bahrain area, which include the Post Office Museum and restoration of the Customs’ building. These projects are being carried out in close cooperation with the Ministry of Transportation.

With regard to the future projects of the Cities Development and Beautification Committee, H.E Shaikha Mai and Dr. Essam Khalaf viewed future projects, such as lighting plans and beautification works targeting the main road starting from Bahrain International Airport to Bahrain's main capital, Manama, and the Financial Harbour. Both sides lauded the success of the lighting project carried out by the Ministry of Works with regard to the flyover leading to Bahrain Bay and the beautification works carried out at Mina Salman roundabout, which has recently won the 2015 MEED Quality Awards for Projects.
