H.E  Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammad Al-Khalifa, President of Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities, has participated, on 14 October 2017, in the Opening of Yves St Laurent museum in Marrakech. held under the patronage of Moroccan monarch His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Salma and attended by renowned diplomatic, cultural and media figures from around the world.
Speaking for the occasion, H.E Shaikha Mai said “ It is wonderful to attend the opening ceremony of such an amazing art edifice in Marrakesh today. The building is dedicated to shed light on one of the most passionate and creative French designers, Yves St Laurent, who said “Marrakech taught me color,”. Because Marrakech is a city that appeals to all of the senses - and one that Yves Saint Laurent fell in love with instantly, immediately influenced by its exotic colours and people. The journey of love took him to Morocco where the magic of the ‘red city’ mesmerized him and revolutionized his creative talents”
On the significance of setting up the museum, H.E  Shaikha Mai said that” The cultural infrastructure projects are not the exclusive  responsibility of the government or  the public sector,  but rather shared by all social components seeking to create a civilizational momentum”.
Worth to mention that The project was spearheaded by Pierre Bergé, Saint Laurent’s former business partner. A stone’s throw from Yves Saint Laurent’s cobalt blue villa and the city’s famed Jardin Majorelle botanical garden, the museum itself, which will cover 4,000 square metres, will provide a storage space for around 4,000 pieces. The permanent exhibition space will be 400 square metres. Conceived as far more than just a museum, it boasts a research library with more than 6,000 books, a bookshop, auditorium and café. The 150-seat auditorium, named after Pierre Berge, will be used for performances and recitals, as well as conferences, film screenings and lectures.
