Bahrain Culture Authority Announces Winners of “Table & Chair” Competition, Gathering creative designers and artists from Bahrain and All over the world

 

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities announced, on 8 December 2020, the winners of the “Table & Chair” competition in a ceremony held at D.Haus exhibition space, in Al-Janabiyah. The award winning ceremony of this online initiative, which was launched by Bahrain Culture Authority in June this year, was attended by Her Excellency Shaikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Director General of Culture and Arts at the Culture Authority, and a number of cultural affairs passionate prominent figures.

After receiving dozens of entries from Bahrain, the Arab world and beyond, the Arbitration Committee Jury selected three designers and artists, namely Mr.  Karim Al -Janoubi, Maryam Khaled Al Khalifa and Khaled Farhan. The announcement event and prizes for this year's winners of the “Table & Chair” competition were generously supported and sponsored by the D.Haus exhibition space.

Speaking for the occasion, Her Excellency Shaikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa said that the outstanding cultural achievements and brilliant record are the results of team efforts and the positive outcomes of the participation of all individuals in a society. Her Excellency congratulated the winners of “Table & Chair” contest, lauding their keenness to come out with their best creative minds and innovative ideas through this competition. Her Excellency also thanked Dr. Haus Exhibition space for the generous support for the fervent rich cultural scene in Bahrain, extending her thanks to all those who have contributed to the success of this competition, as well as the participants who have produced amazing and gorgeous artworks and designs that reflected the constant the general public’s keenness to interact positively with BACA’s initiatives.  

Owner of Dr. Haus exhibition space, Mrs. Nahed Ishaq, for her part, expressed her happiness to attend this award ceremony and the keenness of Dr. Haus to contribute, support and help thrive the Bahraini and GCC creative minds and talented interior designers and furniture designers for their imaginative artistic productions. Mrs. Ishaq voiced the company’s readiness to interact and coordinate with contributors and winners of “Table & Chair” contest, paving the way for the development of local talents and their shining creatively to reach wider international horizons.  

Bahrain Culture Authority’s wining selection criteria took into consideration three main themes; Form and Function balanced harmony, sustainability and Ergonomics, aesthetics and creativity. Thus, Mr. Karim Al-Janoubi revisited and redefined the functionality of the table and the chair, designing his model according to Dilmun civilization heritage in Bahrain.   Maryam Khaled Al-Khalifa presented an amazing art work titled “ Corksi”, which is a furniture system made of lightweight cork that can form multiple pieces of chairs and small tables, which can be formed in different fun ways, and is suitable for use in schools and kindergartens. As to Mr. Khaled Al-Farhan, he offered an innovative model chair characterized by a creative artistic dazzling aspect.  

Indeed, Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities had previously launched “Table & Chair” Design Competition in June this year as part of its continuous efforts to get the public involved in the artistic and cultural events and achievements. Targeting designers and artists especially, the intention of Bahrain Culture Authority’s competition “Table & Chair” was to make it an annual event, an important meeting for creative designers and artists. Bahrain Culture Authority, keen to enhance creative design, encouraged the participants to discover the potential art manifestations of these two pieces and delve into their beautiful significations and functionalities, taking into consideration the shape, function and work environment.  “Table & Chair” competition’s objective is to explore possible table and chair designs and to understand aesthetic and functional qualities of works of art/design. By taking into consideration Form, Function and Ergonomics, designers and artists were invited to manifest "innovative, sustainable and versatile.

 Worth mentioning, that “Table & Chair”, sponsored by D. Haus, is part of the Art Center’s program aimed to enrich the artistic scene in the Kingdom of Bahrain, through a series of different events and exhibitions held for artists from Bahrain the rest of the world.
