In its recent May 2020 edition, the international “Architectural Review” magazine discussed a number of cultural and historical sites in the old city of Muharraq focusing on the locations part of “The Pearling Path: Testimony of an Island Economy” inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The article commences with a historical review of the old city of Muharraq’s historic role in spurring development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when pearling represented the backbone of Bahrain’s economy, and the unique urban aspects that characterized this city compared to other cities in the region.  This has been highlighted by this prestigious magazine dedicated to architecture. Indeed, a report, The Rehabilitation of Muharraq, by Manon Mollard in the May issue of The Architectural Review focuses on Bahrain’s Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage List site, expected to be accomplished by 2121, describing it as “The only pearling center in GCC region currently”.

The article gives a detailed explanation of the project’s different aspects, such as the 16 houses along the pearling path, as well as the 400 façades that have been restored and beautified. The writer also shed lights on Pealing Visitor Center, the public spaces and the construction materials used to implement this architectural project, such as Terrazzo consists of chips of marble, granite, quartz, glass, cement , shell or other suitable materials, given its widespread use for parquets in the city of Muharraq in the 1940s. The magazine also shed lights on the economic aspect of Pealing Path project, its potential capacity to develop the  local community and offer an opportunity for a highly value cultural tourism opportunities that would certainly contribute to achieve a sustainable development.

The Architectural Review also includes a summarized review, annexed with photos and explanatory illustrations and charts of Bahrain “ Green Archaeologies”, Bahrain’s pavilion at  Milano Expo 2015, Pearling Path Visitor Center, near Al-Muharraq Suq, the House for Architectural Heritage , which are one of Shaikh Ebrahim Center for Culture & Research’s subsidiaries.

Worth to mention that the Architectural Review is a monthly international architectural magazine. It has been published in London since 1896.  Its articles cover the built environment – which includes landscape, building design, interior design and urbanism – as well as theory of these subjects.
