In an open discussion session, Bahraini author and screenwriter Fareed Ramadan will discuss his epic novel, the “English Ocean”, which tells a story woven between truth and fiction, and a journey through the worlds of slavery, black magic and the many religions of that time.

13 years in the making, writer Ramadan read dozens of books on identity, history and anthropology. He examined the diaries and accounts of Orientalists in naval fleets, and US and British missions in the Indian Ocean, East Africa and the Arabian Gulf. He also conducted oral interviews with people who can recount stories and collective memories from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, specifically from 1897 to 1935. The geographical context of the novel focuses on the vast territories located within British rule and influence during the golden age of the British Empire.

This event is organized by We All Read Society in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities.
