Details of the Workshop:
Al Jasra Crafts Centre organises a Traditional Boat Making (Al Jalbout) workshop. This craft is considered one of the traditional industries for which the people of the Kingdom of Bahrain have been renowned since ancient times. It is closely associated with them as a community living near the sea, serving as a gateway to the world. The boats’ names and uses have varied, including Al Banoosh, Al Shuai, Al Boum, Al Baghlah and other types that are used in fishing, pearl diving, and transporting passengers and goods. Residents of the Al Naeem and Ras Rumman in Manama have always been pioneers in this profession of making boats. The residents of the city of Muharraq also excelled in practicing this profession, especially in the coastal area of the city. The person who makes wooden ships is called a “Qallaf.”
