THROUGH OUR CLOTHES EXHIBITION - OPEN CALL
If our clothes could speak, what would they say? What do we, as wearers, say about them? What do our clothes say about the environment? What does the environment, in turn, say about them?
This art exhibit, part of the Bahrain Spring of Culture and co-hosted by Fashion Revolution Bahrain, will explore the unique human and environmental relationship to our clothing, reflecting on the themes of care, tradition, sustainability, and the future.
Art submission forms accepted include photography, video, painting, sculpture and installations.
The art should aim to inspire viewers to care for their clothing, make more conscious decisions, and ultimately contribute to bettering the environmental impact of the clothing industry globally, while valuing our unique culture and heritage across generations.
Guiding themes for exhibition:
- Fashion consumerism and the environment (waste, lifecycle, consumer behavior)
- Fashion culture in Bahrain (sharing of clothing between family members, donation culture, etc.…)
- Sentimental connections and how we value clothing (how can we consume slower, and more mindfully?)
- Artisans and makers (tailors, cobblers, embroiderers)
These are provided for your inspiration only, submissions that vary from these themes are also welcome. Some examples have been listed below.
Example ideas include but are not limited to:
- Photography or video showing individuals from different generations and backgrounds handling or presenting their favorite piece of clothing. Display includes anecdotes from a short interview with the subject asking questions such as “what does this garment mean to you?”, “how have you cared for or mended it?” or, for older generations, “how were clothing and consumption habits different in the past?”
- Painting, sculpture or installations, showing the lifecycle of a garment, reflecting on fashion culture in Bahrain, reflecting on fashion waste.
Deadlines:
- Concept and short bio submission deadline: Feb 26, 2020
- Artists notified on selection: March 2, 2020
- Artwork submission deadline: March 29, 2020
- Art exhibit: April 2 - April 30, 2020
Notes to artists:
- Please submit your concept (a description of 250 words max. plus any attachments) of the work you wish to create and a short bio (approx. 50 words) by Feb 26, 2020.
- You will be notified by email if your concept has been accepted by March 2, 2020.
- Your final work will need to be delivered to Qal’at Al Bahrain Site Museum by March 29, 2020 for our curatorial team to view and install (following artist instructions) and collected after the exhibit if unsold.
- The exhibition will open at Qal’at Al Bahrain Site Museum on April 2, 2020 and will be on display until April 30, 2020.
