The Young Artisan - Decorating Gergaoon Bags

Details of the Workshop:

As part of the "The Young Artisan “program, Al Jasra Handicrafts Center organizes a workshop for children to make their own collectibles, “Decorating Gergaoon Bags.” Our Bahraini heritage tells of the “Gergaoon” night, in which children celebrate by going out to the neighborhoods carrying their made bags, wearing their popular clothes, chanting songs, declaring their readiness to receive the “Gergaoon,” which is “a large basket made of palm fronds” inside which is placed a mixture of nuts, and “Gergaoon”. A colloquial word taken from knocking on the door, because children knock on the doors of houses on this occasion, so the occasion was called “Gergaoon”, whose word may be derived from “the joy of the eye”, which is what brings happiness and joy to a person.

 Workshop topics include:

  • Identify the celebrations of the Gergaoon event.
  • Learn how to make a Gergaoon bag.
  • The Gergaoon bag is decorated with popular costumes.

 Workshop Outcomes:
