Traditional Boat Making

Workshop Overview:

Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre organises a Traditional Boat Making Workshop. This craft is considered one of the traditional professions for which the people of the Kingdom of Bahrain have been renowned since ancient times. It is closely associated with them as a community living near the sea, serving as a gateway to the world. The boats’ names and uses have varied, including Al Banoosh, Al Shuai, Al Boum, Al Baghlah and other types that are used in fishing, pearl diving, and transporting passengers and goods. Residents of Al Naeem and Ras Rumman in Manama have always been pioneers in this profession of making boats. The residents of Muharraq also excelled in practicing this profession, especially in the city’s coastal area. The person who makes wooden ships is called “Qallaf.”

  • Learning how to chop wood to create the boat model.
  • Learning how to draw and carve pieces of wood and sanding.
