First Strokes: Introduction to Arabic Calligraphy

In an exceptional encounter, held in collaboration with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Art Centre welcomes the renowned calligrapher Haji Noor Deen, who arrives in the Kingdom to present a unique visual experience where his cultural identity from the Far East intertwines with the rich heritage of Arabic calligraphy and its profound expressions.

Haji Noor Deen Mi Guang Jiang was born in Shandong Province, People’s Republic of China, and is a distinguished scholar specialising in Qur’anic manuscripts and historical Chinese Qur’ans. He received an Ijazah (formal authorisation) in Arabic calligraphy in 1997 from the Arab Republic of Egypt, and in 2000, he established a department dedicated to the teaching of Arabic calligraphy at the Islamic Studies University in Zhengzhou, China.

His artworks have been exhibited in numerous international museums and galleries, including the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the National Museum of Scotland, and the Harvard Art Museum. The British Museum also acquired his renowned piece “The 99 Names of Allah,” which stands as a striking example of art that bridges continents and cultures.

Haji Noor Deen has shown exceptional dedication to culture, education, and artistic training, actively contributing to research and mentoring in order to nurture a new generation of accomplished calligraphers. He was recognised by Georgetown University, in collaboration with the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (RISSC) in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, among the World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims, in acknowledgement of his significant cultural impact and artistic contribution.
