Japanese Makie has a history of nearly 1300 years, and involves sprinkling gold or silver powder on lacquer. The art form, considered one of the finest in the world, spread from Imperial courts and nobility to commoners as it flourished in the 16th century, and still permeates daily life in Japan. The exhibition will trace the Makie art form through the centuries, with items ranging from luxurious ceremonial pieces to common everyday items.
