“Museums for a sustainable society”
Since 1977 International Museum Day is organised worldwide around May 18.Each year, International Museum Day is celebrated around a given theme that aims at promoting museum issues in society. The 2015 theme “Museums for a sustainable society” recognises the role of museums in raising public awareness about the need for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and uses resources in a way that respects living systems. Museums play a key role in this transition, promoting sustainable development and serving as real laboratories for best practices.
On this occasion, Museums in Bahrain join the international community to draw awareness to the important role of museums in the development of society. On May 23, the Bahrain National Museum, Qalat al Bahrain Site Museum and Rifaa Fort Site Museum will open their doors for free to the public. Take advantage of the open doors day and visit the temporary exhibitions (Kalila and Dimna: Fables Across Time and Sicily of the Leopard) at the Bahrain National Museum. Bring the kids for a day of fun and creative activities (Storytelling, dress up, crafts and face painting) and complement your visit with a tea break at Darseen cafe which offers a new kids’ menu and a variety of delicacies crafted especially in celebration of International Museum Day.
Share your museum experience online and send us your selfie at the museum with your best stories on # MuseumDayBH. The best 5 selfies will win gift vouchers from our Cultural Cafes. Winners will be announced on June 1st.
