Violins are weeping over the Arabs leaving al-Andalus,

Violins are weeping over lost time which will never come back

(Palestinian poet Mahmood Darwish)

The myths are powerful and appealing; Al-Andalus is remembered as a paradise, a golden age of beauty, gardens, and libraries, an era of a brilliant civilization where poets and philosophers thrived. Established 30 years ago, Moroccan music ensemble, “Layali Ennagham”  recalls sweet memories, another vital legacy. Indeed, often grounded in poetic visions, Andalusian music calmed agitated spirits, carrying forward the sense of mystery that is one vital legacy of the era.

From North Africa,  recalling the Andalusia magical evenings of music, love  and poetry, the Group  embraced the classical Arab cultural concept of tarab, the intimate union of ecstasy shared between musician and listener. It wove Morocco's traditional Al-Andalus style known as Ennagham El Anndalusi or malouf effortlessly together with musical strands from around the Mediterranean, summoning memories of medieval Andalusia, Ottoman court song, Federico Garcia Lorca, and some of Morocco's celebrated twentieth-century poets and composers.

An evening of music and sweet memories revived by authentic melodies and genuine rhythms. The rhythms occur in the following order in a complete nuba: basît (6/4),qâ'im wa nusf (8/4),btâyhî (8/4),darj (4/4),quddâm (3/4 or 6/8) and musicalized poetry, where poems, moushahet, zajal and barwala ( in  typical  popular Moroccan linguistic jargon accent) co-exist to create a beautiful symphony of music and love.
