Arab music superstar Lutfi Bushnaq takes the stage to perform his signature style which blends the classical Arabic music and Andalusian Tunisian ma’luf genres with a mix of global flavors. |
Lutfi Bushnaq is a renowned Tunisian composer, oud player, and singer whose vast repertoire of Arabic music extends from Egyptian popular music and Algerian-inflected Raï music to spiritual music and derived compositions. He is famous, in particular, for introducing the Tunisian ma’luf - a type of Andalusian music whose name literally “customary” in Arabic - genre to outside world. Considered one of the stars of Arabic music, he has performed around the world and released several albums in collaboration with ensembles and artists from a variety of genres.
Bushnaq was inspired by the efforts to revive the ma’luf genre led by Rashidiyya Ensemble in Tunis and supported by the institutionalization of the genre by the government following the country’s independence from France in 1956. In 1993, he recorded his seminal album Ma’luf Tunisi which took the genre beyond the Arab world and into a whole new level of worldwide exposure by combining it with contemporary influences and styles to create his own signature original style.
