In celebration of the Bahrain National Theatre’s opening anniversary, prominent dancers from the world-known Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre will be performing the revolutionary ballet piece Swan Lake in a frontline gala.
The original Swan Lake ballet was written in 1876 and soon became one of the most famous ballets of the world and the real gem of the Russian ballet school. The masterpiece, created by M. Petipa and L. Ivanov, accompanied by some of the most beautiful music ever written for ballet by P. Tchaikovsky, has won millions of hearts. Swan Lake is known to be one of the most unique and outstanding performances that can’t be compared to any other existent ballet performances.
It is generally believed that the libretto of Swan Lake – a story about princess Odette who is turned into a swan by Von Rothbart the evil sorcerer – is based partly on Russian folk tales and partly on a novel by Johann Karl August Musäus, the author of the collection Volksmärchen der Deutschen (German Folk Tales). Either way, the narrative motif of the ballet is the eternal triumph of the true love that saves men’s soul.
The version of Swan Lake by the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre retains all of the key features of the classical, academic choreography created by M. Petipa and L. Ivanov, and saves all emblematic dances like a series of different national dances, however it reinterprets the story.
Libretto by Alexey Miroshnichenko based on the scenario by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltser
Choreography by Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov, Alexander Gorsky, Konstantin Sergeyev, Alexey Miroshnichenko, staging by Alexey Miroshniсhenko.
