Director of the Nigerian Center for Arab Research.
This lecture explores the realities of Arab-Islamic culture in sub-Saharan Africa, starting with a formative question: Is Arab culture outside the Arabian nations in a progressive state or not? What is the evidence of progression, whether it is negative or positive? Among the issues that the lecture will address are concepts of Arabism and Islam in African contexts, discussions on the realities of Arab and Islamic cultural institutions, tools for circulation, understanding Arabic’s scope in media and culture, as well as delving into the absent and implicit aspects of Arabic and its culture in Africa. Future scenarios to enhance the cultural presence of Arabic in sub-Saharan Africa will be presented.
