The “Long Journey of Hope to Re-union: Illustrated and Documented History of Shaikh Hamad Causeway” Lecture by Dr. Nader Kadhem

The lecture reviews the illustrated and documented history of the first-built modern bridge in the history of Bahrain, namely Shaikh Hamad Causeway that links Muharraq Island with the city of Manama. The lecture displays visual sources and archive documents that illustrate this dream project since its inception, then the multiple modifications that it underwent in the 1960s, until the present time’s retouches. It was considered the biggest and most important project undertaken by the government of Bahrain at the time, when the country was an archipelago made up of a group of islands and small islets. However, carrying out and implementing this project was not easy at all and faced countless challenges; no one could determine precisely how much the exact cost would be and what other hurdles and difficulties would come along, in a country that was suffering a shortage of architects and engineers, construction companies and no experience or expertise in building modern strong bridges the way it was constructed.

The lecture will be held in Arabic
