Manama took on an important role as a cultural and economic crossroad due to the diversity of commercial, social and cultural practices throughout history that formed the features of its current urban fabric. In the early 20th century, the city witnessed significant growth and development, becoming the commercial and administrative center of Bahrain and experiencing significant urban expansion as many new buildings and infrastructure projects were constructed. However, the urban fabric of the city preserved its historical character, as the traditional and transitional houses still maintain a visual and aesthetic character and bear witness to the development and changes of architecture in Bahrain. To this day, the city is still lively, vibrant, and attractive to tourists and locals alike, due to the diversity of its shops, commercial complexes, hotels, and cultural and religious centers. The session will revolve around the history of the establishment of the Manama Municipality as the first in the Arabian Region, the urban developments that Manama has witnessed, and the relevant challenges it is facing.
