Dr. Mounir Bouchenaki, World Heritage Affairs’ Consultant , at Bahrain Authority for culture & Antiquities, has joined Sultanate of Oman’s National Museum’s Board of Trustees in mid-September 2018. The new member may maintain this membership for the next four years to come.
Oman’s National Museum’s Board of Trustees also include His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tarik al-Said - Minister of Heritage and Culture, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Her Excellency Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed ash-Shibaniyyah - Minister of Education, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees, His Excellency Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi - Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – member, His Excellency Dr. Hilal bin Ali al-Hinai - Secretary General of the Research Council – member, His Excellency Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed ad-Dhoyani - Chairman of the National Records and Archives Authority – member, Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovskiy - Director General of the Hermitage Museum, Russia – member.
Worth to mention that Dr. Bouchenaki had been Director of the Division of Cultural Heritage at UNESCO from 1990-2000, then Director of the World Heritage Center at UNESCO from 1998-2000, Assistant Director-General for Culture from 2000 to early 2006, Director-General of ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) 2006-2011. Dr. Bouchenaki was also appointed as Director of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH), Manama from 2012-2016 and since 2012, he has been appointed as Special Advisor to ICCROM and Special Advisor for Cultural Heritage to UNESCO.
The Sultanate of Oman’s National Museum in the Governorate of Muscat was inaugurated in 2015. The building has come up over 13,700sq m of which 4,000sq m has been dedicated to 14 halls for fixed exhibits of more than 5000 artifacts. It is a significant project tasked with preserving the Omani heritage and material and non-material collectables of all manifestations of the history, culture and arts of the Sultanate.
