Dr. Mounir Bouchenaki, World Heritage Affairs’ Consultant , at Bahrain Authority for culture & Antiquities, has taken part at the 32nd Technical Session of the ICC-Angkor, which was held on 11 and 12 June 2019 in Siem Reap-APSARA Conference Hall. The conference was attended by representatives of UNESCO and World Heritage experts.
Dr. Mounir Bouchenaki highlighted during his participation speech at conference session the importance of preserving and safeguard of World Heritage, the follow-up of the different projects, activities and research carried out by operators intervening at the site of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site List site since 1992. After Angkor was inscribed in the World Heritage List on 14 December 1992, an International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor (ICC-Angkor) was established in Tokyo, Japan 1993. The creation of this ICC-Angkor was one of the conditions given by the World Heritage Committee to accept the Angkor Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
According to UNESCO, Angkor site is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.
