Tunisian Film Festival Kicks Off, At Bahrain National Museum

The Bahrain National Museum hosted the launch of the Tunisian Film Festival yesterday evening, Wednesday the 26th February, in the presence of His Excellency the Tunisian Ambassador to the Kingdom, Mr. Salim Al Gheryani, and a number of ambassadors of brotherly countries, as well as pioneers of the cultural movement in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Tunisian Film Festival is held in cooperation with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and the Embassy of the Republic of Tunisia in the Kingdom of Bahrain, reflecting the richness of Tunisian cinema.

The audience enjoyed a cinema evening with a movie screening “Weldi “Dear Son”, by Tunisian writer-director Mohamed Ben Attia, shedding a light on the very first casualties of terrorism, those left to pick up the pieces of shattered family lives. The movie tells the story of a father risking his life to look for his son, who in one fateful night, steals away with all his belongings and leaves only a note on the computer explaining to his parents that he has left to join a group in Syria. What follows is a slow-burning emotional rollercoaster headed by the quiet persistence of Riadh in getting back his son, even if it means losing his wife and himself in the process. They have to deal with the trauma and heartache of having someone close to them fall prey to radicalization of ISIS brainwashing extremist groups. Inspired by real events, Ben Attia's minutely observed sophomore feature is less about jihadi fighters than the loved ones they leave behind, wrestling with guilt and grief, shame and blame.

The Tunisian Film Festival will carry during March, screening on 4 March 2020 another movie, titled “Railway Men”, by Director: Areej Al- Sehiri, while on 14 March, lovers of Tunisian movies will enjoy “Lune Noire” by Director Nawfel Saheb Ettaba. Cinema shows start at 6:00 pm at Bahrain national Museum
