The Bahrain National Museum will, starting from the month of July 2021, launch an awareness program aimed to spread knowledge about the historical and archaeological heritage of the Kingdom of Bahrain entitled "Artifact Piece of the Month", shedding lights on museology acquisitions that are not included and displayed in the permanent exhibits of the Bahrain National Museum. The museum will display these scheduled artifacts them to the public periodically in a challenging multifaceted way, changing pieces every month.
This piece will be displayed according to the latest cutting-edge museology arts international display methods, in a distinctively creative way in the museum lobby, whereby the visitor will be delighted as he can obtain all information about this displayed piece by scanning the QR Code located on the display interface and enjoy a historical review introductory video about it.
The project begins this month by highlighting a unique artifact, which is a rare wooden sarcophagus coffin, only two were found in Bahrain in good condition, and this coffin is one of them. It unearthed and excavated found in one of the Al-Shakhoura Burial Mounds by the Bahraini Archaeological team during the excavation season 1996-1997.
This sarcophagus dates back to the Tylos period, more precisely to the historical era between the first century BC and the first century AD. This sarcophagus was made locally from imported wood, commonly as North Indian or North Pakistani rosewood or shisham. This wood is strong and tough, with color golden to dark brown. It is 1.90 meters long, 0.55 meters wide and 0.37 meters high. The cap is slightly larger on the inside, measuring 0.38m in height. The thickness of the boards ranges from 0.5 to 2.0 cm. obviously, dovetail refined joinery technique used in woodworking was applied meticulously applied in one of its panels during assembly process.
