Food is Culture is moving to Al Jasra Handicraft Center for its second event, bringing baker Layal Dana together with designer and artist Amal Rafie for a joint exhibition

The sixth edition of “Food is Culture” will host chef and sourdough baker Layal Dana with fashion designer and collage artist Amal Rafie on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the Al Jasra Handicrafts Center for the festival’s second event. In compliance with the precautionary measures to limit the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) recommended by the Ministry of Health in the Kingdom of Bahrain, all activities of the Food is Culture festival require pre-registration. Those interested in attending can register via the Culture Authority’s website www.culture.gov.bh.

The duo will present a joint exhibition to their audience that will engage all the senses, expressing their conceptual interpretation of time and humanity while reflecting on the influences of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage. Attendees will have the opportunity to savor the flavors made by chef Layal Dana, as well as enjoy an artistic visual experience prepared by designer Amal Rafie.

Layal Dana is a sourdough baker that aims to enhance communication between people and their food sources, and to develop local, sustainable ways of consumption through her work. As for Amal Rafie, she draws on elements of Bahraini heritage to inspire her artworks, and one of her techniques is using printed fabrics for patchwork.

It is noteworthy that A-Jasra Handicrafts Center is working on reviving the traditional crafts and industries in Bahrain with their programs that attract local craftsmen, all which cover a variety of different crafts, including: pottery, textile and basket weaving.
