Dr. Mounir Bouchenaki, the Honorary President of the RIMM, BACA’s World Heritage Affairs Consultant and former Assistant Director General for Culture at UNESCO, presented and presided over the eleventh honorary international symposium meeting “Monaco and the Mediterranean,” which was held under the patronage of His Highness Prince Albert II, at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in the Principality of Monaco On March 10 & 11 2022.
This symposium at the Oceanographic Museum will bring together historians, philosophers, and archaeologists, along with architects, politicians and personalities, to talk about their work on the ground and their latest achievements in terms of conservation, reconstruction and rehabilitation. Open to the public, this biennial event brings together experts from all sorts of backgrounds, to consider the major contemporary issues affecting the Mediterranean region, and to propose potential solutions. Over the years, a number of important topics have been covered during the symposium, including the towns and cities of the Mediterranean, archaeological sites, and fresh water, the latter being devoted to artists and intellectuals.
The 2022 edition of RIMM chose “Islands of the Mediterranean, shadow and light”, featuring many lectures and debates, during which a number of experts and specialists spoke about these islands, some of which are undergoing transformations due to climate change and conflicts, and many of them reflect the richness of the region and the civilizations that have passed through it. The 15,000 islands of the Mediterranean are tiny or vast, verdant or arid, prosperous or unfortunate, with sometimes-emblematic destinies. Looking towards the bright and dark faces of some of these unique lands and in particular the islands of the eastern basin of the Mediterranean, those of the Tyrrhenian Sea and those further east, experts in science, literature and des arts will analyze their destiny and pay them a sensitive and scholarly tribute.
Indeed, since their creation in 2001, the Monaco and the Mediterranean International Meetings, placed under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II, bring together high personalities from the scientific, artistic and literary world every two years. In 2020, the theme of the Meetings was “Acting for heritage”.
