In 2008, Pierre Bergé decided to create a Berber Museum at the Jardin Majorelle. The museum is housed in the former painting studio of the artist, Jacques Majorelle, and is set in the sumptuous garden that today bears his name. Since the mid-1980’s, a collection of Islamic objects collected by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé was displayed there. Following the inauguration of the Berber Museum in 2011, the Fondation Jardin Majorelle has undertaken a number of initiatives, both in Morocco and overseas, heightening the public’s awareness and knowledge of Berber culture via symposiums, publications, and travelling exhibitions. In 2013, the Jardin Majorelle welcomed 730,000 visitors, of which 140,000 visited the Berber Museum. Björn Dahlström discusses the creation of this new museum, as well as upcoming projects and challenges facing the institution.
Björn Dahlström
Art historian and museologist (École du Louvre, Paris), Björn Dahlström was in charge of programming at Museum of Modern Art in Luxembourg from 2000 to 2007. In 2003, he curated the exhibition, "Air conditioned" by the artist, Su Mei Tse, for which he received the Golden Lion for Best National Participation at the 50th Venice Biennale. In 2010, he was invited by the Fondation Jardin Majorelle to oversee the management and museology of the new Berber Museum, and is today its curator.
